AURORA BOREALIS
Are light phenomena consistingof colourful, dancing and varied patterns in the night sky. The more northern lights you see, the closer you are to the earth's poles. In Finland they are most common in Lapland in winter, as they occur in areas with clear skies, darkness and frost. The northern lights are caused by the charged particles of the solar wind hitting the Earth's atmosphere.
There is also a mystical belief that tells us that the northern lights are created by the whimpering of the tail of a fox running on the snow. Which story are you telling?
POLAR NIGHT
Polar night is often talked about when referring to the time of the heart of winter also in Southern Finland. In fact polar night is an annual period during which the sun does not rise above horizon. The phenomenon occurs in the Earth's Arctic Circles and their higher latitudes. The closer you get to the poles the earlier the polar night begins and the longer the polar night last. At the northernmost point of Finland the polar night lasts about 51 days.
MIDNIGHT SUN
The nightless night is a natural phenomenon in which the sun does not set below the horizon during the day. For this reason, the phenomenon is the opposite of the polar night. The phenomenon is due to the inclination of the axis of rotation of the Earth relative to the orbit. The phenomenon occurs only in the Arctic Circle and above latitudes. The closer you are to the polar regions, the longer nightless night will last. In Nuorgam the northernmost point of Finland the sun is above the horizon continuously for 74 days.
SAIVO
Is Sámi and refers to a pond between two fells from which a strem departs but into which no waters flow. It has also been used as food storage. According to mythology, through it one can peek into the afterlife.
